Holiday Flag Program - Flag Day

  • Woodland Heights Civic Association P.O. Box 7754 Houston, TX 77270 USA (map)

WHCA and Boy Scouts Troop 30 observe this federal holiday by flying flags at homes in our neighborhood. The Holiday Flag Program marks these occasions by displaying flags at participating sponsors' homes; the money raised supports Boy Scout Troop 30 and the WHCA Beautification Committee. To join the Holiday Flag Program, visit the WHCA's online store to become a sponsor.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing the official design for the U.S. flag: 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue field. Red symbolizes valor, white signifies purity, and blue represents justice. The 13 stripes honored the original colonies, stars have been added over time for new states, totaling 50 stars today.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing Flag Day. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed it into law. Flag Day is a national observance day, not a federal public holiday.
