Memorial Day is a Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

It began after the American Civil War as Decoration Day, when citizens decorated fallen soldiers' graves with flowers. On May 5, 1868, General John Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance. He chose May 30th because it wasn’t the anniversary of any Civil War battle. After WWI the holiday evolved to commemorate all American military personnel who died in all wars.

In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The law moved Memorial Day, along with a few other federal holidays, to Mondays to create uniform three-day weekends. The change officially took effect in 1971, when it became an official federal holiday.
