This story from the October 1997 issue tells the story of Beauchamp Springs.
There is much more to be found regarding Beauchamp Springs and the man who it was named after Thomas D. Beauchamp who immigrated fro Kentucky to Texas and settled in the bayou area buying a 54 acre tract of land from the Allen brothers on the south bank of White Oak Bayou which included the free flowing springs that would be named Beauchamp Springs along with a community he tried named Beauchampville.
Looking back through the history of both Houston and our Woodland Heights neighborhood you can find mentions of Beauchamp Springs. For Houston the springs served as a "source of fresh drinking water" and its water was "sold downtown at market for 75 cents for a 30 gallon barrel" and was touted as " a welcome change to the often contaminated waters of Buffalo Bayou." In addition, Travis Elementary was originally named "Beauchamp Springs Public School."
We hope you'll enjoy this bit of history. If you want to learn more about one of Houston's first water sources you can visit any of these links.
