About Labor Day
Labor Day is a federal holiday that celebrates the achievements, contributions, and strength of American workers. The holiday started in the late 19th century during the industrial movement to recognize trade unions and better working conditions. It became an official national holiday in 1894. As a federal holiday, government offices, schools, post offices, and banks close for the day.

For many people, the long weekend marks the unofficial end of the summer season and features parades, barbecues, and retail sales.
