Houston City Council First Ever Evening Public Session

  • Woodland Heights Civic Association P.O. Box 7754 Houston, TX 77270 USA (map)

For too long, the only way to speak at Public Session in Houston was to take time off work or your busy schedule in the middle of the day. That meant your voice at City Hall would only heard if you could afford to leave your shift, your classroom, your family.

That changes today.

Starting August 26th, the City of Houston will hold a 6 PM Public Session on the final Tuesday of every month.

Because your government should be accessible and available to you when you need.

This victory belongs to the teachers, nurses, small business owners, shift workers, students, and caregivers who shouldn’t have to choose between a paycheck and being heard by the representatives they elected.

I introduced this proposal so you wouldn’t have to choose.

Because, after hosting more than 20 Town Halls in District H, the message was clear, people want to be heard, and at a time that doesn’t upend their lives.

During the last Council Agenda Meeting, some members of Council said they hadn’t heard enough support from constituents during the Prop A Committee or Public Session. But that silence is exactly the issue we’re addressing. The people who wanted this couldn’t make it to City Hall for those midday meetings.

You organized. You wrote. You called.

And now, because of you, more Houstonians will have a real opportunity to speak directly to the people they elected to represent them.

This is what it should look like. Government that works for working people.

Thank you for fighting for this.

Let’s keep going,

Mario Castillo
Council Member District H
