The Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is holding its annual “Happy Trails and Hot Dogs” free family event in the park on Saturday May 18th. And once again we are holding it in conjunction with our friends/co-sponsors the White Oak Bayou Association (WOBA); who will hold their fun loving “Fish Off” event. As in the past the free lunch provided will run from 11AM until 1:00 PM and will include hot dogs with all the fixings, chips, plus St. Arnold’s root beer and root beer floats: all while they last. We will also serve lemonade and water.
Back by popular demand FWP will have Bayou City Play as our guest and they will once again entertain children and adults alike with their inspired creative play events and materials.
Our guest list is expected to include Whole Earth Provisions, the Audubon Society, Wendy Wright (our remarkable community birder), and others.
Lemonade Day is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand. It began right here in Houston, Texas in 2007. Since then it has grown from 2,700 kids to over 55,000 kids in Houston.
The foremost objective of Lemonade Day is to empower youth to take ownership of their lives and become productive members of society – the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow.
Each child that registers receives free materials that teach them the lessons of Lemonade Day like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some.

A portion of the family fun originally planned for the FNL event last week has been rescheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, December 16th.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting Woodland Heights at the Norhill Esplanade on Sunday afternoon, December 16 from 3:30-5:30. Neighbors wishing to participate in Operation: Stocking Stuffer can bring an unwrapped, unopened new toy to the event where the donation boxes will be set up. There will be s’mores and the final sale of LITH merchandise for 2018.
The judging committee will be rolling down the route Thursday evening on the 6th, so make sure to have your decorations lit if you would like to participate. If you’re ON the route, you’re automatically in the running. If you’re OFF the route, you’ll need to nominate your house or your neighbors by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org so the judges can be sure to include you in the competition. This year there will also be a BEST BLOCK competition (on-route only), so get busy stringing up those lights with your neighbors! Good luck to you all!
