Happy Holidays, everyone!
Lights in the Heights® began 24 years ago as a
small, neighborhood holiday festival of music
and open houses along Bayland Avenue and the
Norhill Esplanade. The original idea was
suggested by a resident’s visit to New Mexico
where they were smitten by beautiful displays of
luminaria. Evolving beyond the original visual
treat, the event became a way for neighbors to
get to know one another and celebrate the
holiday season. That first year approximately
1000 luminaria lined Bayland Avenue, from
Houston Avenue to Studewood. Residents baked
cookies and took them to open houses for friends
and visitors to enjoy. Early on, only a dozen or
so musicians performed on porches. Today, over
seventy entertainment groups volunteer their
time and talent for this event.
Unique in its venue - neighborhood
porches and yards - and it’s all volunteer
organization, Lights in the Heights® has become
a part of many residents’ holiday memories and
traditions.
This year, Lights in the
Heights® will take place on December 10th from
6:00 – 9:00pm along Bayland and Woodland
Streets.
We are scaling back the event considerably this
year. Please
note that there
will be no food vendors or activities on the
esplanade and all posted and non-posted parking
restrictions will be enforced. This means that
your car WILL be towed if you are illegally
parked!
We
will once again have Lights in the Heights®
merchandise available on-line beginning the week
of Thanksgiving.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time are streets
closed?
The police start
bringing out the barricades at around 5:00pm to close
off surrounding streets. The barricades come down at
9:00pm, You
cannot park on the closed streets.
Now that streets are closed, where
should we park?
Residents are
encouraged to park their cars off of the street closure
(Bayland and Woodland) if at all possible. Encourage
your friends and neighbors to park on cross streets or
streets parallel to the festival route and to come
early! Getting in and out is tougher the closer in you
want to get to the route and traffic is VERY heavy
during the event. The following churches and parks will
have parking (please note they are not liable for
damages or stolen item): -
Once we have permission
we'll update this page to include the churches, parks, schools and businesses will
allow parking on their properties. Please note they are
not liable for damages or stolen items, and please
respect their properties:
If my
house is on the route, can I leave during the event?
Yes. We encourage people to wait
until after the event if possible, but if you need to
leave you may do so at any time. Please remember to take
your driver's license, as police officers will be
checking addresses when allowing access to cars
returning to the route area. However guests to parties
will NOT be allowed access to closed streets,
What if it rains?
We have not scheduled a rain date
for Lights in the Heights ®. The event will not be
cancelled unless it is raining heavily at 6 p.m. In past
years, residents along the festival route were gracious
enough to allow luminaria to be stored on their porches
until the early afternoon rain passed.
Will
there be bathroom facilities on the route?
Yes, there are port-o-lets located
on the Norhill Esplanade and along the route
What if we have an
emergency and need to get onto a blocked street?
In case of emergency, proof of
residency (your driver's license) will allow access onto
Bayland and Woodland from 6-9 p.m.
I'm
having a party. Where should my guests park?
Encourage your guests to come
early (prior to 5 or 6 p.m.) or to park on the streets
parallel to the festival route.
How
can I keep uninvited guests from coming into my private
party?
A sign saying "Private Party"
should do the trick and this year we are selling them!!!
