Lights in the Heights®

Photos by F. Carter Smith

Lights in the Heights® is our neighborhood's premiere annual event held each year on the second Saturday in December from 6-9 p.m. The route is typically along Bayland Street and one of its parallel thoroughfares. The event attracts thousands of visitors each year. Depending on costs, permits, etc. streets may or may not be open to auto traffic. Typically, foot traffic is s so heavy that it makes the streets impassible for vehicles anyhow.

If you have not seen Lights in the Heights before, you have to see it to believe it. Hundreds of luminaria line the streets, marking an elegantly beautiful path for revelers to trek. Carolers and live musicians will also line the streets and hold forth on Victorian porches and send their music out from streetcorners and private gardens. The entire neighborhood turns out to welcome visitors with cookies, punch, and wassail. A good time is had by all!

Revelers can treat themselves to a carriage ride along the route (available for a fee). Santa typically arrives from the North Pole around 7:00 p.m. on the Norhill Street Esplanade, with pictures available for a small each. A special stage sponsored by the City of Houston is used for the largest acts, although dozens of other stages are set up in homeowner's yard throughout the lighted route of the event..

In keeping with tradition, festive Lights in the Heights® t-shirts are sold. Purchases help fund the event.

Enjoy the spirit of Lights in the Heights. Take advantage of the evening by walking the route and visiting with your neighbors. Encourage guests to park their cars on any of the side streets, and join you on a stroll of the illuminated streets of the Woodland Heights!

If you are a neighborhood resident, there are many ways you can volunteer to help. To volunteer, contact the Woodland Heights Civic Association.
